Can I attend the RAAF Museum without a booking or ID?

Accepted Answer

No. Members of the public who arrive at RAAF Base Point Cook without a confirmed and complete booking - this means full names and details for all attendees registered prior to visiting - and valid photographic ID for all attendees over 16, will not be permitted to access the base.

Why do you need my rego details?

Accepted Answer

The RAAF Museum is located on an operational RAAF Base and vehicle registration details are required to permit visitors' vehicles entry onto the Base. Victorian road rules apply to all roads on base and Victorian and military police conduct speed and registration checks and security patrols.

Question 3

What is "current, valid photographic ID"?

Accepted Answer

ID must be photographic, current (not expired or cancelled) and verifiable - if required security staff must be able to verify your ID via the authority who issued your identification or their representative in Australia.  See below for examples.

Question 4

What are some common examples of valid photo ID?

Accepted Answer

Physical and digital Australian Driver's Licenses (digital ID must be presented via the relevant app), Passports or Australian Student IDs are acceptable. Other identification issued by an Australian Government Department may also be acceptable. If in doubt, please email us for assistance.

Question 5

Are children required to bring ID?

Accepted Answer

ID is required for all persons over the age of 16. For children this may be in the form of student ID. All visitors under 18 years of age must be accompanied at all times by a parent or legal guardian while at the RAAF Museum and on RAAF Base Point Cook.

Question 6

Can I make a group booking or attend on a specific day?

Accepted Answer

We welcome school, community, special interest and other groups. For groups of 10 people or more please email us. Group and special interest bookings can be accommodated outside regular open days, subject to staff availability to support. To enquire, contact raaf.museuminfo@defence.gov.au.

Question 7

I'm a school teacher/group coordinator. Can you assist with curriculum or special interest queries?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We are happy to discuss the needs of educators and other group coordinators. The RAAF Museum's exhibits can be readily linked to curriculum areas such as History and STEM. By prior arrangement, we can also organise specialist staff to talk with your class or group.

Question 8

Can I take photographs?

Accepted Answer

Photography is permitted inside RAAF Museum buildings and at the interactive flying display and outdoor tarmac areas where heritage aircraft are displayed. Photography of any other buildings or areas is not permitted.

Question 9

Do you have a café?

Accepted Answer

No. There are no food vendors at the RAAF Museum or RAAF Base Point Cook, however there are shops and restaurants within short driving distance. There is an undercover picnic area available for visitors' use. BBQs are not permitted. Only bottled water is permitted in Museum and flying display areas.

Is there parking on site?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The RAAF Museum carpark is located 400m after the entrance gate on the right-hand side of the road, opposite the RAAF Museum entry, and clearly marked. Museum staff will guide you upon arrival. Please do not park in any other parking areas before the Museum.

Do you still do flying displays?

Accepted Answer

The Air Force Heritage Squadron, No 100 Squadron, conduct interactive flying displays at the RAAF Museum on some open days between 1 - 2 pm (subject to weather and operational constraints).  Feel free to  call or email us a few days prior to visiting to check if flying is scheduled.

Can I catch public transport?

Accepted Answer

There is no public transport to RAAF Base Point Cook. The nearest bus stop is around 2km away and the nearest train station 7.6km away. If visitors arrive by car ride service (such as taxi), travel to the museum will need to be on foot from the security gate entrance.

Can I ride my bicycle?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There is dedicated bicycle parking outside the Museum. Please remember, however, to bring your photographic ID to permit Base entry.

How much time should I allow for my visit?

Accepted Answer

Our visitors often say: "We could have spent the whole day here!" and that's very true. There is so much to see and learn at the RAAF Museum. As a minimum, we recommend allowing at least two hours to walk through the various galleries and hangars, and longer on interactive flying display days.

What other attractions are nearby?

Accepted Answer

RAAF Base Point Cook is only 5km from the historic Point Cook Homestead and the Point Cook Coastal Park. We're also less than 10km from the Werribee Open Range Zoo, Werribee Park Mansion and the Victoria State Rose Garden. There are also restaurants, a marina and a golf course close by.

Question 16

Is RAAF Base Point Cook still an 'Open Base'? Can I visit other areas or buildings?

Accepted Answer

No. RAAF Base Point Cook is a security-controlled Defence establishment patrolled by civilian guards and military police. Entry to the Base on RAAF Museum Open Days provides access to the RAAF Museum precinct only. It is prohibited to attempt access to any other buildings or areas.

Can I donate RAAF artefacts or memorabilia at the Museum?

History and Heritage Branch - Air Force may accept donations of historic artefacts (eg documents, photographs, rare uniform items, medals or other memorabilia). If you have an item you'd like to donate, please email saf.cur@defence.gov.au and Collections Management staff will respond to you ASAP.
