Event description
Learn about the role of the base in the defence of an Australia fearing imminent invasion.

About this event

As war clouds gathered, construction of RAAF Station Canberra began in late 1939, eventually becoming an important base accommodating more than 1100 personnel. Many of the original buildings were temporary and no longer exist, but a number of key buildings remain, as does much of the original streetscape. On this Walk we will view the remaining buildings and learn about the role of the base in the defence of an Australia fearing imminent invasion. Stories and photos will bring to life a unique unit, RAAF’s 18th (NEI) Squadron. Comprising members of both the Dutch East Indies Air Force and RAAF, the squadron flew American-made Mitchell B25 bomber aircraft to attack Japanese submarines which shelled Sydney and Newcastle.

Meeting Place: Follow Scherger Drive (off Pialligo Avenue) and continue straight on at the small roundabout, where helpers in high vis vests will direct you to free car parking on the left. The Walk will commence outside the nearby brick guard house.

Walk Leader:  Trevor Lipscombe and Anne Claoue-Long

Bad weather:  Unless otherwise advised by email, we will be at the meeting point where a decision will be made as to whether to proceed or postpone.

Note:  For the comfort and safety of other walkers, we do not allow dogs on our walks.

Audio tour guide system: we will be using our new audio tour guide system to help the hard of hearing and to assist in physical distancing. We have two types of earphones - one fits over the ear (not in) and the other over the head. You are welcome to bring your own earphones (with a normal phone jack ie not an Apple lightning connector). The receivers and earphone will be sanitised and you will also be asked to use hand sanitiser before use. The use of the system is optional.

Price: Please note that, as previously advised, from January 2021, ticket prices will be $15 per person to cover part of the cost purchasing and maintenance of the new audio system. In addition, funds raised by our activities such as Heritage Walks go towards supporting the work of the National Trust in other areas. We think this still represents good value for money as you can hear from a variety of guides with expertise in their subjects.

COVID-19 safety: Please check the current ACT health guidelines on protecting yourself and others before booking on this walk. Please note that you must cancel if you are unwell (a refund will be provided on request); you should maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres from other people during the walk and observe good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs. If required, your contact details will be provided to health authorities. For this reason, we are now asking for your phone number. Hand sanitiser will be available before and during the Walk.
