Description

QWMN Forum 2018 - Water Modelling for the Future: Collaboration | Integration | Use

Plesae note, registrations will close at 5pm on Monday 19 November. To enquire about tickets after this date, please email us directly at qwmn@watercentre.org.

In Queensland, there are significant strengths in the research, development and use of water models to inform the management of landscapes and catchments, as well as the design and management of water for our cities.

To progress the use and usefulness of water models further we need to better integrate data sets, models and the outputs of different models operating at different scales. We need to better collaborate across, and integrate, landscape and urban modelling, research and practice, and model development and model use. We also need to improve our collective ability to develop, attract and grow the skilled personnel and workforces that we rely on.

The QWMN Forum 2018 builds on the success of 2017 forum, by bringing together a broader cross-section of the Queensland water modelling and use sector, including those working in research, education, state and local government, water suppliers, utilities and consulting firms specialising in urban development.

The emphasis of the Forum is on discussion, dialogue and engagement across the QLD water modelling sector. To facilitate and encourage discussion, each plenary session will include time for questions and discussion, and all breakout sessions will have approximately half of the allocated time dedicated to chaired discussion.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAM

The aim of the forum is to:

  • consolidate and grow awareness, participation and collaboration among water modelers and users in Queensland

  • share knowledge of research and innovation in water models and use

  • build ways to better work together to increase the use and usefulness of water models for policy, planning and management purposes

  • identify themes and issues where the community of water modellers and users in Queensland can maximise future QWMN activities and events to progress these matters.

Program highlights

The Honourable Leeanne Enoch MP, Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts and Dr Paul Lawrence from the Department of Environment and Science will open the forum.

Multiple plenary sessions follow, including Linda Dobe from the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy discussing water security in a managed landscape, John Ruffini from the Department of Environment and Science addressing the role of models for supporting the state water policy, Tony McAlister from Water Technology exploring smart use of water models in the design of a master planned community and Dr David Rissik from BMT Eastern Australia discussing water modelling for climate change adaptation planning.

Parallel sessions will explore urban water and landscape function tools; provide live demonstrations of SOURCE, MUSIC and other eWater software; discuss how to create opportunities in the sector and drive innovation, explore model information and application, and critically assess workforce capability development in the sector. Speakers include Adam Berry from Synergy Solutions, Alan Hoban from Bligh Tanner, Dr Ian Prosser from WaterIP, Dr Lucy Reading from Queensland University of Technology and Chris Tanner from CRC Water Sensitive Cities.

The Forum will also include interactive workshops and a not-to-be-missed panel discussion addressing the future of the Queensland water modelling sector for decision makers and users.

Benefits

At the QWMN Forum 2018, you will:

  • hear from keynote speakers on various topics, including: joint model development across organisations and sectors, models that integrate various data sources, and ways to better describe the water cycle and its performance in an urban or regional management system.

  • hear presentations selected to provide an insight into current technical practices in developing and using models.

  • participate in workshops designed to help shape future water modelling practice and grow the water modelling workforce in Queensland

  • engage in dialogue with an invited panel of speakers from Government, research and industry

  • meet and connect with researchers, developers, users and decision makers from a broad range of issue areas – from landscape and catchment to urban

  • network and share knowledge and good practice with colleagues.

Who should attend?

If you research, develop, use or communicate about water models and their outputs for regional landscape or catchment planning or management, urban planning and development, or water management in Queensland, the QWMN Forum 2018 is an event you cannot afford to miss. Attendees of previous QWMN forums have included:

  • researchers and academics

  • consultants

  • model custodians and users

  • state and local government officers

  • water utility representatives

  • bulk water supplier representatives

  • NRM group representatives

  • postgraduate students.
