For International Archives Day, Australian Queer Archives' Angela Bailey will discuss five historic records in PROV’s collection that have a specific and unique meaning to Victoria’s contemporary queer communities. These records, from love letters to divorce papers and petitions were chosen to be included in “A History of LGBTIQ+ Victoria in 100 Places and Objects.”
The report, which is the first of its kind in Australia, won last year’s Collaborative Community History Award. It highlights the rich, diverse and unique history of queer communities in Victoria and demonstrates how these communities are reflected in the places, objects and landscapes that surround us.
The theme for International Archives Day 2022 is #ArchivesAreYou which explores the importance of seeing our communities’ stories reflected in our archives. “A History of LGBTIQ+ Victoria in 100 Places and Objects” shows us that while the experiences and voices of queer communities have not commonly been included in the historical record, they are, and always have been, an integral part of Victorian social, political and cultural life.
Tickets are free but registration is essential.
