Description

Queensland Kinship Care Forum II

Towards real support for all Australian kinship children and carers

Date: Wednesday 26 February 2020

Time: 9.00am - 4.00pm

Venue: Brisbane International Virginia, 21 Zillmere Road, Boondall

The Kinship Care Forum is aimed at progressing the national agenda to raise awareness about the lack of recognition and support for extended family members caring for children, and find a way forward to influence national policy in recognising the rights and unique support needs of these children and their kinship carers.

The forum will focus on children in kinship care, in both informal and formal care arrangements, with grandparents, siblings and other relative kinship carers in all States and Territories of Australia. There will be a particular focus on what the Commonwealth Government might be able to consider by way of developing better support for children in kinship care.

The program is still being finalised, however some likely highlights include:

  • Megan Mitchell, National Children’s Commissioner, will deliver some reflections and learnings about advocacy for children in informal and formal kinship care

  • The research report for the young kinship carers research project will be launched by Megan Mitchell

  • Panel presentation by five young kinship carers, all of whom participated in the research study

  • Bev Orr, OAM, kinship and foster carer advocate and researcher, will consider legal issues for kinship carers in exercising their parental responsibilities

  • Sue Elderton, National Policy Manager, Carers Australia, will discuss the National Young Carers Model of Support and its potential relevance to young kinship carers

  • Tricia Murray, CEO Wanslea, will argue for support for kinship carers on the basis of need not legal status

  • Dr Meredith Kiraly, University of Melbourne, will talk about how we move towards recognition and support for Australia’s hidden kinship carers

  • Candice Butler, Practice Development Manager, QATSICPP, will discuss findings from recent consultation in relation to an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Kinship Care model.

Co-hosted by PeakCare Queensland, the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak (QATSICPP) and CREATE Foundation in association with IFYS (Integrated Family and Youth Service).

Please note a small fee of $100 per person will be payable upon registration to contribute to the costs of venue hire and catering. Kinship carers attend free of charge.

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

For enquiries about the forum, please contact Annika Stehn via email (astehn@peakcare.org.au) or phone (07 3368 1050).

Registrations close C.O.B Tuesday 11 February 2020.
