A festival of quantum-inspired films. See the shortlist and ask a panel of experts about the science

About this Event

A festival of quantum-inspired films

The Quantum Shorts festival called for short films inspired by quantum physics and the universe answered. Filmmakers all over the world responded with their movies.

Join EQUS for a screening of the shortlisted films at the Elizabeth Picture Cinema and ask a panel of quantum experts questions about the science

Your ticket includes:

  • Light canapés and one drink from the bar
  • A small popcorn or choctop for the screening of the shortlisted Quantum Shorts films

Quantum experts panel

Dr David Gozzard- an experimental physicist working on laser communications, LIDAR, and quantum key distribution. David is a keen science communicator who has performed at the Perth Science Festival, spoken at TEDx, taught physics in a Jumbo Jet flying 30,000 feet over Antarctica, and built exhibits for the Gingin Gravity Discovery Centre museum. David was a shortlisting judge for Quantum Shorts 2018.

Christian Marciniak - an experimental quantum physicist researching the construction of next-generation quantum simulation hardware using trapped ions to study problems even the largest supercomputer could not do. He is an avid teacher, student mentor, and science communicator from year nine students to adults.

Dr Jacqui Romero, an experimental quantum physicist and 2019 Westpac Scholar. Jacqui looks at how quantum mechanics affects the classical view of cause and effect. She has been a visiting scientist for Science Week, a shortlisting judge for Quantum Shorts 2016, and a fact-checker for a BBC children's show.

Michael Kewming, an experimental quantum physicist building experiments using single particles of light to study quantum information, high dimensional quantum systems, and foundational questions about the nature of quantum theory. Michael loves talking about science. When visiting his home town in rural Victoria, he regularly gives public talks about quantum physics, science and philosophy. He has appeared on ABC Gippsland breakfast radio to talk about physics and was part of the Quantum Games exhibit at the World Science Festival in 2018.

About Quantum Shorts

Run by the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore with a constellation of prestigious partners, the Quantum Shorts contest series is now in its seventh year. Quantum Shorts has alternated between annual calls for science fiction writing and filmmaking since 2012.

EQUS (the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems) is a scientific partner for Quantum Shorts. Our researchers work across Australia. They are developing quantum machines.
