Description

FREE PUBLIC EVENT Hosted by the ME/CFS/FM Support Association Qld Inc and the Fibromyalgia and CFS Gold Coast support group .

As many as 240,000 Australians suffer with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). 25% of these are bed-ridden or housebound, some for years. Among the debilitating symptoms of this disease are: Post Exertional Neuroimmune Exhaustion (PENE or PEM), neurological impairment (including 'brain fog', pain and/or sleep disturbance); neurosensory, perceptual and motor disturbances; immune gastro-intestinal and genitourinary impairments; and energy production/transportation impairments.

Learn why we need to think differently about exercise for people with ME/CFS and how damaging it can be when inappropriately promoted. You can help improve the quality of life for these people who are marginalised and unseen within our communities by hearing the latest research and information.

Speakers:

  • Dr David Tuller, Senior Research Fellow, public health academic and journalist from the Centre of Global Public Health, University of California Berkeley. Crowdfunded to gather information about biomedical research into the disease in Australia and learn from the ME/CFS community.

  • Therese Fossheim, Senior Physiotherapist and Exercise Scientist and Emerson Da Rosa, exercise physiologist from Physiologic, Robina. Therese is also an experienced metabolic consultant and together with Emerson and others in the practice help people with ME/CFS to use objective heart rate monitoring to better manage their energy envelope.

  • Kathy Dallest is a person with ME/CFS for over 18 years and is the Fibromyalgia and CFS Gold Coast support group facilitator. Having worked in health for many years she now advocates for the ME/CFS community and is especially interested in quality and safety.

Light catering including GF and DF options, tea, coffee, water on arrival. Air conditioned venue with wheelchair accessibility and ramp access. Site parking with some disability spaces.

We would like to remind everyone that many of the ME/CFS community are chemically sensitive and so ask that people attending refrain from wearing any perfume, aftershave or anything with an odour. The smell from cigarettes can also cause a problem for many so we ask that you please be mindful of others, thank you.

Robina Community Centre is a non-smoking venue.

Cash donations on the day to further research and to fund the organisations and their projects would be most appreciated.

Tickets are limited. Your Eventbrite ticket is your RSVP. As this event has very limited tickets, if you cannot attend for any reason and know at least 24 to 48 hours in advance of the event, email fmmecfs.goldcoast@gmail.com with the name shown on your ticket so we can enable wait listed people to attend.
