Event description
QUEENSLAND AFRICAN WOMEN'S DINNER DANCE

About this event

The Annual African Women's Dinner dance was started by Rosemary Karuiki (Australia's Local Hero, 2021), in partnership with the African Women’s Group. There has since been 15 annual African Women's Dinner Dances over 16 years (2020 cancelled due to Covid-19). Rosemary started working for the NSW police where she began working alongside the Sudanese community and she began to realize the challenges the African community, and especially African women have with accessing support services.

She thought about how she could address the issues facing African women and how she could engage and help them access these services. What do women like to do? ‘They like good food, dressing up and dancing!’- This was how Rosemary came up with the idea for the African Women’s Dinner Dance,

Rosemary found a partner whilst working in the community sector who was equally as passionate about the idea and together with Rosemary, they formed a planning committee and sought out funding options.

The first dinner dance had around 350 women, all of whom were African women, besides service providers who were sharing information. E.g. Domestic and Family violence services.

These events work to engage African women AND provide resources/ information about relevant services and thereby reducing accessibility barriers. The first event was such a success that everyone wanted another one and then another! until It became an annual tradition.

Eventually, the event was opened up to all women. Opened it up to all women- no men allowed! (Children were excluded). Everyone either dressed up in cultural gowns or for those who were not African wore colorful gowns- everyone was so happy to dress up! Attendees socialized, talked about jobs and various different topics, for example, differences in parenting styles and international women’s day

The African Women's Dinner Dance has its inaugural event for the first time in Queensland and the aim is to go big and gather a large amount of people (African women) together.
