Description

Why this course?

The world is moving towards a knowledge based economy. Companies and individuals with specialist skills in STEM fields will be in increasing demand. Investing a good high level language like Python will place you in a good position to ride the coming wave of innovation - investing in this course will give you a significant headstart.

Course content

On day 1 of the course we take you through the basics of installing and using Python, both as a general purpose tool and integrated into Jupyter notebooks. We will cover essential Python syntax and objects, and show you how to put these together to form programs.

On day 2 we dive deep into the STEM capabilities of Python. We will cover visualisation, multi-dimensional data analysis, data analytics and using the Python science library to solve real-world applications.

Syllabus

Day 1

  • Installation and environment setup
  • Jupyter notebooks for rapid prototyping and reproducible research
  • Essential Python objects and syntax
  • Software development with Python

Day 2

  • Numpy for multidimensional data representation
  • Data visualisation with Matplotlib and Jupyter
  • Scipy, the Python science library for multi-dimensional data processing
  • Pandas for data analytics (bonus material)

Both days will each include an interactive exercise with worked solutions. The exercises are designed to solidify knowlege covered in the workshop and to help get you started in coding in Python. A soft copy of all workshop materials will be made available to participants under a Creative Commons Licence.

What you need to bring

Participants will need to bring a laptop with a recent operating system installed and access to a normal user account. For the course we will be using the Anaconda Python Distribution for Python 2.7, available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux as a free download here.

For this course you don't need any prior programming knowledge or skills, having some first-year tertiary education in mathematics will be helpful on day 2.

The workshop is fully catered, and will be held in modern well-equipped training rooms in the heart of the Perth central business district. Abundant transport connectivity and parking options are available and a number of major hotels are nearby.
