Event description

Description

Writers Victoria is thrilled to offer you a chance to attend a special luncheon event from 12.00-12.45pm on Fri 30 August 2019 at the Wheeler Centre with Publishability Fellowship recipients: creative non-fiction writer and essayist Fiona Murphy; YA speculative fiction writer Mary Borsellino; memoirist Heidi Everett; and writer and poet Jessica Walton. These extraordinary writers will be in-conversation with writer and Publishability Project Officer, Jax Jacki Brown.

Following the luncheon, we invite you to stay on and participate in a disability equality training session from 1:00pm - 4:30pm tailored specifically to the publishing industry, as a fully subsidised professional development opportunity. This training has been developed and delivered by The Disability Advantage a social enterprise of Arts Access Victoria in collaboration Writers Victoria.

Would you like to engage confidently with writers with disability? Learn more about stereotypes and how to avoid them? Create an inclusive publishing environment dedicated to authentic representation of people with disability?

Training will be customised to suit editors and will cover:

  • Best practice language on disability
  • The Social Model of Disability
  • How to make access and inclusion a priority, thinking through how to budget for access
  • How to find, approach and engage writers with disability
  • Barriers to participation
  • Knowing your organisation's obligations around access and inclusion
  • The creative case for inclusion, beyond compliance

The facilitators of this workshop are artists with disability, skilled at using their creative talents to illuminate complex issues around access and inclusion.

Places are limited so please register your attendance early to ensure you don’t miss out on this valuable opportunity. To cover catering costs the lunchon is $20 per person plus booking fees but the workshop is free of charge. Registrations close COB Thurs 22 August.

We’re happy to take questions. Please email Jax on publishability@writersvictoria.org.au with any queries.
