The Australia India Institute is delighted to be hosting former Finance Minister of India - Mr P. Chidambaram during his visit to Australia.

Join us for this exclusive lecture where Mr Chidambaram, will discuss Australia, India and experiences from his time in office.

About the speaker:
Mr Chidambaram is the former Union Minister of Finance and Union Minister for Home in the Government of India. He is an eminent lawyer practicing in India's Supreme Court, a public intellectual and author. A collection of his articles were published in 2008 under the title A View from the Outside: Why Good Economics Works for Everyone. He writes a regular column for '
The Indian Express' newspaper that covers a wide range of economic, political and social issues.

As India's Finance Minister between 1996–1998, P. Chidambaram launched an ambitious tax reform program that tackled India's fiscal deficit. His budget for 1997-98 earned widespread praise as the “dream budget”. In 2008, his move to waive farmers’ debt played a crucial role in boosting aggregate demand in the Indian economy and effectively insulated India from the impact of the global financial crisis.
