A New Age of Sustainable Development – Australia, Asia, and the World
Monash Sustainable Development Institute, in partnership with SDSN Australia, New Zealand & Pacific, is delighted to present world-renowned professor of economics and leader in sustainable development, Professor Jeffrey Sachs in Melbourne this October.
Biography
Jeffrey D. Sachs is a world-renowned professor of economics, leader in sustainable development, senior UN advisor, New York Times bestselling author and syndicated columnist.
Twice named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential world leaders, he is widely considered to be one of the world’s leading experts on economic development, global macroeconomics, and the fight against poverty.
He is the co-recipient of the 2015 Blue Planet Prize, the leading global prize for environmental leadership, and many other international awards and honours.
Professor Sachs is the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University and from 2002 to 2016, served as Director of the Earth Institute. He is currently Director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) under the auspices of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and Chair and Founder of SDG USA, a non-governmental initiative to promote the Sustainable Development Goal concepts in the United States.
Professor Sachs is Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the Sustainable Development Goals, and previously advised UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on both the Sustainable Development Goals and Millennium Development Goals and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals.
From the mid-1990s till today, Professor Sachs has been involved with economic reforms in many parts of Asia, including India and China. He works closely with many international organizations, including the African Union, the Asian Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Development Programme, the World Food Programme, UNAIDS, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, among others.
He has authored and edited numerous books, including three New York Times bestsellers: The End of Poverty (2005), Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet (2008), and The Price of Civilization (2011). His recent books include: To Move the World: JFK’s Quest for Peace (2013), The Age of Sustainable Development (2015) and Building the New American Economy: Smart, Fair & Sustainable (2017).
