Deakin Law School's Centre for Comparative Corporate Governance presents

Professor Beate Sjåfjell

Corporate governance in the European Union: Recent developments and future challenges

We are pleased to invite you to a seminar led by Professor Beate Sjåfjell who will present on the most recent corporate governance developments in the EU and what these mean for business and investors.

The European Union (EU) increasingly sees the significance of corporate governance in promoting economic development and in protecting involved interests. After the global financial crisis of 2007-2008, the EU recognised that short-termism contributed to the financial and business scandals that were revealed. The last years have also seen an increasing recognition of the impact business has on broader societal concerns, including human rights and environmental protection. Reforms have been undertaken or are being considered in several areas, including new EU rules on the disclosure of and reporting on non-financial issues and on the participation of shareholders in corporate governance.

Professor Sjåfjell will also share with us her perspectives on whether these corporate governance developments are sufficient to promote the necessary transition of business and finance from business as usual and onto a sustainable path, in the economic sense as well as socially and environmentally.

About the speaker:

Beate Sjåfjell is Professor Dr. Juris at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Law, and head of the Faculty’s Research Group Companies, Markets, Society and the Environment as well as several international networks and projects. Beate has presented numerous papers internationally, including at the International Corporate Governance & Law Forums in 2014 in Melbourne and 2016 in Hong Kong.
