Supporting students in developing their professionalism while on placement

About this Event

The University of Canberra invites you to attend a workshop on supporting students in developing their professionalism while on placement. All levels of supervisors are invited to the workshops.

Date: 23RD SEPTEMBER, 2019

Time: Registration from 8:30 am for a 9 am start - till 5 pm

Cost: Free – A light lunch will be provided

Workshop outline:9am – 12:30pm: Guest speaker Janeane Dart will be presenting on:

Session 1: (9am – 9.45am) What is means to be Professional

• Introductions / workplace contexts• Understandings of professionalism activity (small groups)• Share SLR paper and model of professionalism in dietetics – small group activity and discussion• Present some of the theory around this (positivist vs interpretivist lens on professionalism)

Session 2: (9.45am –10.30am) Learning and developing professionalism (uni and placement):

• Formal curriculum / Informal curriculum / Hidden curriculum • Role modelling (activity)• Supporting students in their development of professionalism• Professional socialisation and identity development

10.30-10.50 Morning tea break

Session 3: (10.50am –11.45am) Managing unprofessional behaviour (professionalism lapses)

• Vignettes – voices and stories from the coal face• Having hard conversations• Reflexivity (of students and educators) and reflective practice• Remediation• Managing emotions, managing health and wellbeing (of students and educators)

Janeane works in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University as a Senior Lecturer. Janeane is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and has over 25 years' experience as a clinical dietitian working within Australia and the UK.

Janeane has extensive clinical experience in public and private hospitals, community settings and private practice and has a special interest in gastroenterology, including Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. She has also held various management positions including Dietetic Manager of a large hospital department in Oxford UK from 2002-2005.

Janeane has had extensive experience as a clinical teacher in Australia and the UK and followed her passion for student training and education into the higher education sector, working at Kings College London 2005-2007, completing her Graduate Cert in Academic Practice. Janeane has been at Monash University since 2008.

Janeane has presented nationally and internationally and published research in the areas of health professional education as well as different clinical areas of nutrition and dietetics.

Janeane's primary research interests are in educational research, especially the teaching, learning and assessment of professionalism in dietetic education. This is the focus of her doctoral research.
