PISA Data and Non-cognitive Student Characteristics

The Programme for International Student Assessment, better known as PISA, is an international study conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). PISA results and data are released every three years. They have been used to identify and evaluate gaps in student- and system-level performance around the world. Australia also takes PISA results as a yardstick to appraise and reflect upon a trend in student achievement over time in reading, mathematics, and science.

It has been less known to the public that PISA measures students’ non-cognitive outcomes as well. The examples include motivation, interest, attitude towards school, teacher-student relationships, and sense of belonging. The main reason for including non-cognitive measures is that they can harness self-control, discipline, volition, motivation, and ultimately student learning. Selection of non-cognitive measures is a four-year process involving a wide range of experts and stakeholders from around the world.

In this workshop, we will cover what types of student characteristics have been historically measured in PISA, how these characteristics have been measured, and the way scores are produced and can be interpreted.

The workshop will end with the information about the most recent development for the PISA 2021. We will also discuss major targets for intervention that are demonstrated to work and that produce the best learning and behaviour among students in Australia and world-wide.


About the Presenter

Jihyun is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the UNSW. She studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for her Master’s degree in Education and Human Development (1995-1996), and received her PhD in Educational Measurement and Applied Statistics (1996-2003) from Columbia University, New York. She worked at the Educational Testing Service (ETS), Princeton, New Jersey from 2004 to 2010, where her main work involved questionnaire development for the large-scale assessments of the US National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Subsequently, she held a position of Assistant Professor in Psychological Studies at the National Institute of Education in Singapore from 2010 to 2012 and moved to Sydney Australia in 2013.

For the past 15 years, she has published nearly 80 academic journal articles, book chapters, and technical reports. Her primary substantive research interest is in identifying non-cognitive psychological constructs that predict academic achievement of school-aged children and adolescents (e.g., self-beliefs, interest, confidence, attitudes, and behavioral tendency). Her secondary line of research involves technical aspects of large-scale survey design. She is currently on the editorial boards of the Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, Journal of Global Education and Research, Journal of Educational Research Applications, and Educational Psychology. She is a recipient of the John R. Hayes Award for Excellence in Research in 2013, the George A. Miller Award Nomination for an Outstanding Recent Article on General Psychology from the American Psychological Association in 2012 and 2013, and the American National Council of Teachers of English for College Composition and Communication Award for Impact in 2013. She also writes about her research for the general audience and has contributed to The Conversation, Aeron, ReEd (Research in Education), and The Academic Minute in Inside Higher Educations.
