Description

Data infrastructures and data use in schools and systems
Presenter: Dr Kalervo Gulson

Dates: 6 August 2018
Times: 9am-4pm

Title: Data infrastructures and data use in schools and systems

The use of performance and administrative data in schools and systems is now well established, both nationally and globally. This workshop will look at the different political and cultural uses of data from an Australian Research Council funded international study in data infrastructures and data use in schools and systems.

This workshop will identify and propose a range of ways to engage with and use educational data, and the effects of data and data infrastructures on schools and systems. The workshop will focus on the following examples:

- Data infrastructure and a new way of governing Australian education – the example of the National School Interoperability Program

- Rejecting datafication - the focus on professional knowledge in Tokyo, Japan.

- Why expertise matters - the example of Chicago Teachers Union, USA

- The uses and limits of data dashboards - a Canadian school board, data days and a strategic plan

This workshop will be of benefit for educational leaders and teacher unions who wish to have both a national and international perspective on both the use of data and its effects on schools and systems, and addresses the AITSL Principal Standr 4: Leading the management of the school.
