Event Details

The Defence Act 1903 initially excluded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from enlisting in the First World War – resulting in many volunteers enlisting under assumed ethnicity/cultural backgrounds. Some even changed their names, place of birth and other personal details to enlist. The challenge now is to uncover these lost Queensland stories to share with others. State Library of Queensland is continuing to discover and confirm Queensland Indigenous soldiers of the First World War, and in this unique teacher professional development, we will present the current findings and engage Queensland teachers to research and discover a hidden history that has concealed these men and women for over one hundred years.

Part of the Q ANZAC 100: Memories for a New Generation program, this workshop will guide teachers to explore and uncover Queensland Indigenous soldiers. As a group, explore a rare photograph from the First World War and contribute to the current research to discover what stories are captured in a single photo. This professional development session is designed for teachers and educators with a specific interest in teaching the First World War.

Advisory warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants to this workshop are warned that this workshop presentation contains images of deceased persons.

Registration for this event is free. If you register and find you can no longer attend, please contact us so we can release your ticket. Registration is required for catering purposes.
