Description

2pm - 3pm Public Lecture: Beyond the Newsroom

VENUE: MPavillion , Queen Victoria Gardens, in the centre of Melbourne’s Southbank Arts Precinct

The New Beats journalism project and La Trobe University’s Transforming Human Societies Research Focus Area are delighted to welcome Professor Mark Deuze for a public lecture on Friday October 27, 2017.

This event will be introduced by Prof Lawrie Zion (Professor of Journalism at la Trobe University and Director of the Research Focus Area Transforming Human Societies).

While we spend more of our lives connected to the media, the livelihoods of those who make the media have become increasingly uncertain. In this lecture, Mark Deuze will discuss the organisation of news and media work at a time when newsrooms are contracting or disappearing. What are the implication of these changes on the media we consume? He will also discuss findings from the Dutch chapter of the Australian-based New Beats project, which recently surveyed laid off journalists in the Netherlands.

Mark Deuze, who is professor of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, has published extensively on how our lives increasingly feature in the media. As a research partner in the Australian Research Council-funded New Beats project, he has led a study focusing on the aftermath of journalist redundancies in The Netherlands, where, like Australia, newsrooms have contracted in recent years.

His seven books include Media Life (2012, Polity Press), which examines how media functions as a prism to understanding key issues in contemporary society, where reality is open source, identities are - like websites - always under construction, and where private life is lived in public forever more. His research also examines the employment and work experiences of journalists at a time when media work is become ever more precarious. His forthcoming books are Making Media (out in 2018 with Amsterdam University Press, co-edited with Mirjam Prenger), and Beyond Journalism (co-authored with Tamara Witschge, scheduled for 2019 with Polity Press).

Lawrie Zion is Professor of Journalism at La Trobe University and Director of the University’s Transforming Human Society’s Research Focus Area. He also leads the New Beats project which is investigating the aftermath of journalist redundancies.
