Want to take your film making skills to the next level? Fed up of boring locations? Want to take control of your vision?

The aim of this course is to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to gain employment in the Art Department at entry level, in the film and television industry or to help manage their own short film projects.

At the end of the course, students will have completed a design package which demonstrates their knowledge and skills and could be used as a presentation tool for future employment or to help manage their own film projects.

This course is designed for people who are making their own films, those who wish to gain employment in the Art Department at entry level, and as an introduction prior to further studies.


This course will cover:

- Philosophy of set design, why it’s important
- The basics
- The project (design, look, feel)
- The set up (tricks and tips)
- Viewing of footage and debrief


Training Outcome

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the different job titles within the art department and understand their individual roles.

  2. Discuss industry policies, procedures and etiquette.

  3. Present design ideas and concepts according to industry standards

  4. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the design process according to industry requirements.

  5. Produce props list for the various departments

  6. Draft a budget

Tutor - Kerri is a production designer and creative director with over 25 years’ experience working in the film, television and events industries. Kerri has designed and art directed feature films, television series, commercials, corporate videos, doco dramas, special events, exhibition stands, conferences, gala dinners and commercial interiors. The scope of her practice includes designing and project managing the fabrication and installation of large-scale artworks and environments for Special Events and Public Spaces. She has created and produced installations and experiential spaces for clients such as: Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, The Star Casino, Telstra, IBM, QANTAS, Virgin Airlines, AMP, Visa, Panasonic, Commonwealth Bank, University of Technology Sydney and SOCOG.


*Classes will run from 6:00pm - 9:00pm each Thursday night (7/9, 14/9, 21/9, 28/9, 5/10, 12/10) for the 6 weeks.
*All courses will be held on campus at AFTT.
*This course must have a minimum of 8 students to run.
*The content is suitable for students aged 18+.
