Education Overview

This foundational course provides an overview of palliative care, including fundamental concepts such as the palliative approach, which prioritizes quality of life despite a life-limiting illness. Participants will learn to identify the phases of care and develop a shared understanding that palliative care begins at the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, not just in the terminal phase.

Module 1 focuses on debunking common myths about palliative care and deepening participants' understanding of its core concepts. These include comprehensive symptom management, the interdisciplinary team approach, communication and shared decision-making, support throughout the illness trajectory, bereavement care, and the importance of self-care for healthcare professionals.

Through a combination of group discussions, case studies, and resource materials, participants will engage with key concepts essential for providing compassionate and effective care to individuals facing serious illness.

The End-of-Life and Palliative Care Education and Training Framework is a tool outlining the essential knowledge and skills for healthcare professionals caring for those with end-of-life needs. It consists of three domains: Principles of Practice, Clinical Management, and Leadership/Management. Each domain's learning items are categorised into three expertise levels: Foundation, Consolidation, and Extension, forming a continuum of learning.
