Description

Primary Immune Deficiency Update for Paediatricians 2019

Beware the lymphopenia: SCID diagnosis, management & newborn screening"

The Royal Children’s Hospital Allergy and Immunology Department will be hosting the second Primary Immunodeficiency Update for Paediatricians on Saturday 27th July, 2019. Although individual primary immunodeficiencies (PID) are rare, collectively they are becoming increasingly prevalent and an important cause of chronic disease. With more than 350 inborn errors of immunity described to date and new primary immune disorders continuingly being recognised, it is important to regularly inform the paediatrician about these conditions to ensure early diagnosis and appropriate management of these patients.

The 2019 PID Update will focus on Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), the most severe form of PID, often described as a paediatric emergency. Newborn screening (NBS) for SCID and severe T cell lymphopenia (including complete DiGeorge syndrome) commenced in 2008 in the United States. New Zealand introduced NBS for SCID in December 2017 and NSW started a SCID NBS pilot in August 2018. SCID NBS will be discussed at this year’s Update, including the diagnostic workup and medical management of infants identified by newborn screening.
