Event Details

Dr Syed Hasan will present on ‘Estimating price elasticities of demand for food in Australia: Implications for GST reform’.

The presentation will be followed by questions and informal discussions in the relaxed setting of the Fellows bar. Drinks and finger food will be provided.

Abstract: In this seminar, Syed Hasan will introduce ongoing research on estimating the price elasticities of food products in Australia. The research uses detailed information about household supermarket purchases from the Australian Nielsen Homescan Survey. The elasticity estimates are used to examine GST reform options for food products. The findings reveal that there is considerable scope for raising revenue by increasing the GST rate and broadening its base to include food. It is feasible for low-income households to be compensated to ensure they are not on average adversely affected. The research on which this seminar is based has recently been featured in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Bio: Dr Syed Hasan is a researcher at the Crawford School of Public Policy at ANU. He received his PhD from ANU in 2014 and previously held appointments at the Bangladesh Planning Commission and the Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh. He has published in journals including the Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Agricultural Economics, Energy Economics, and Economic Record.
