Event description

Description

Public speaking is one of the most feared of all human activities, which is why good speakers are so respected. They have conquered the fear and have dared to share their passion and vulnerability. They have experienced the liberation of being able to communicate!

This practical 6 hour short course is presented in two sessions over two nights (Wednesday 21 & 28 November). The workshops are delivered in a supportive environment, and you will receive individual feedback.

Course content: 2 x 3 hour workshops

Session 1
An introduction to amazing public speaking

  • Knowing what you’re talking about: Become the expert in your field
  • Engaging the audience
  • Speaking with visual aids
  • Body language and other non-verbal elements
  • Pulling it all together

Session 2
Learn by doing: Presenting to others

The second session is even more hands-on than the first! This week you’ll be presenting to your class (length depends on the number of participants) using everything you learned from Session 1. After your presentations, the class will deconstruct and you’ll celebrate your achievements. You’ll then learn how to become a speaker and how to market yourself so that you'll have a product organisations and community groups will want to know about!

Presenter: Dr Lynette Maguire is an author, presenter, researcher and social commentator. Lynette graduated with her Doctoral degree from the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2015 with the University’s highest award for a graduating student; The Chancellor’s Medal. She has been teaching at USC for almost a decade and is a sought-after presenter about her doctoral research, which asked “Is social media enabling an increase of narcissism and violence in teens?”

Away from the University, Lynette is a popular marriage celebrant and Founder and Chief Executive Officer of My Wedding Wish Ltd, a Charity that gifts weddings to couples where one or both have a terminal illness.
