Event description

Description

General Practitioners (GPs) are often the first point of contact for patients experiencing mental health issues and the most common providers of mental health services. Although GPs commonly see high-prevalence disorders, most will also encounter a range of less common mental health problems, such as psychosis. Medication, a useful therapeutic adjunct, is commonly used as part of the management of mental health-related problems.

Presented by:

Psychiatrists from Conduit Health, a Telepsychiatry and Telehealth service founded in 2014, that aims to deliver specialist health care in an effective, convenient and readily accessible way for the general population, whilst providing additional support for primary care physicians.

Topics Covered:

  • Antidepressant therapy, Benzodiazepines and Antipsychotics: Potential benefits, acute and chronic side effects, and possible dangers including the cardiovascular risks of some medications.

  • Case studies: When to refer to psychiatrists and specialised mental health services and when to continue management in general practice.

Allocated 4 Category 2 points in QI&CPD Program for the 2017-2019 triennium.
