Preparing for SIRS and effective Incident Management in Home Care
Event Information
About this event
Why is SIRS and Incident Management important?
From 1 July 2022, the Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS) will be expanded from residential care to include in-home aged care services including HCPs, CHSP and Flexible Care Services. The Department of Health state that: "This will provide greater protections to more than one million senior Australians receiving in-home aged care services".
The Royal Commission made several recommendations regarding importance of reporting serious incidents, increased accountability of providers and scrutiny of the regulator (Recommendations: 97, 100, 103, 105). Many home care providers do not have adequate processes for incident management and will struggle to meet the requirement of SIRS.
Regardless of the regulatory implications, identifying, responding, reporting and analysing incidents and 'near-misses' is a crucial component of delivering high quality care and safety to consumers.
