Pre COP 15 Australian Summit
Event Information
About this event
2021 has been dubbed by environmental organisations as a ‘Super Year For Nature’ due to these major meetings and decision-making moments coinciding.
As a ‘sister’ conference to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP15 is being held from 11 to 24 October 2021, in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. It exists to ensure: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilisation of genetic resources.
This COP is the most important UN Biodiversity Conference in this decade as countries are expected to agree on a Post-2020 Global Framework for Biodiversity and new targets for protecting biodiversity. Business is also expected to play a new and expanded role in implementing key outcomes from the negotiations. On the domestic front we also have Australia's Strategy for Nature 2019-2030, the overarching framework by which Australia enacts its obligations under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, and the national policy umbrella for all biodiversity related efforts in Australia. What can be done to inspire and ensure action on the ground in Australia? Hosted by the Australian Business and Biodiversity Initiative, Australia’s business partner to the CBD, this unique Virtual Summit spread across 3 days with international and Australian speakers will look at the role and actions that the Australian community can take to ensure we reach a meaningful agreement. Crucially it will explore what government, business and community commitments should be made and how can they be achieved, and what tools and resources are available to reach those possible outcomes.
