About this Event

About this Event

Dr June Alexander (Flinders University) presents a workshop on Practical ways to support people with disability well.

This event will cover:

• Choice Making - making choices is a fundamental right that most people take for granted. Opportunities for choice making can have beneficial behavioural effects, including an increased engagement level and improved behaviour.

• Communication/AAC- being able to communicate contributes to self determination and can impact positively on behaviours of concern. Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) includes a variety of methods used to supplement or replace speech.

• Emotional Regulation/self regulation - there are a variety of methods that can assist someone to respond to emotions appropriately.

• Fading – planning to ‘fade’ prompts is often overlooked by staff. This can lead to learners/people with disability becoming prompt dependant. This reliance on prompts leads to a lack of independence.

• Self-Instruction – assists learners to plan, organise and evaluate their own learning. The process includes five distinct steps and aids, in particular, learners that are easily distracted.

When: Wednesday 4th March 9:30am – 4:00pm
