Join us for this collaborative, networking workshop where you will develop a plan to teach social & emotional skills.

Each participant will be provided with a framework to implement social and emotional learning in their classroom, a template to guide their programming and numerous practical strategies that can be implemented in their classroom. In particular, the presenter will:

  • Outline the evidence-base for teaching social and emotional learning programs.
  • Discuss the wide variety of social and emotional programs whilst highlighting programs suited to students with learning delays/ disabilities.
  • Examine the learning continuum of personal and social capabilities in the Australian curriculum.
  • Define the difference between social /emotional problems and behavioural problems.
  • Consider the assessment of social and emotional skills and the place of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Explore the role of explicit and incidental teaching when incorporating social and emotional learning in the curriculum.
  • Discuss 'social thinking' (Michelle Garcia Winner 2007) and 'context blindness' (Peter Vermeulen 2012).
  • Guide participants to develop a plan for their context.

Intended Audience:

Junior primary, primary teachers & special educators/ teachers.


Leanne Longfellow is a special education teacher, academic researcher and a parent of a young adult with disabilities. She has taught in a variety of special education settings over a thirty year period, provided numerous professional learning sessions for educators, presented at Australian and international educational conferences, taught education in a university context and recently completed her doctoral research in special education at UniSA in 2018.

Participants will receive:

  • A certificate of attendance referenced to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
  • Electronic handouts of the powerpoint, notes, templates and suggested reading provided the day before the workshop.
  • Hard copies of the notes and templates provided at the workshop.
  • Afternoon tea is included.
