Powerful Owl training field trip - Samford
Event Information
About this Event
This walk will be along trails at night near Samford, north of Brisbane. Locations will be announced to those who sign up, but might include Bunyaville or Samford CP, or other forested locations near Samford.
We will break up into groups of 20 or less and each group will walk a kilometre or two while recording any owls heard or seen. We will also review owl calls and the variety of things you will need to do if conducting field surveys for the Powerful Owl project on your own. These field sessions are optional for project participants but they will provide an opportunity to meet others you may be able to go owl watching with later. They are also a great chance to ask questions about the project or the field work. Field sessions are available to those who have registered, if you have not registered previously you will need to sign this form when you come.
I will have copies you can sign on the day.
You can complete the steps for formal registration to the Powerful Owl project by either attending a workshop (i.e. Samford Powerful Owl workshop ), or by following the steps highlighted on-line: Powerful Owl project website (see Brisbane tab lower down on page)
You will need to wear shoes appropriate for hiking, long-sleeve shoes and trousers, and should bring a small torch so you can see the path. Powerful torches are OK if they have a red light.
The project aims to monitor Powerful Owls in southeast Queensland in order that we can identify how best to conserve them. There is, unfortunately a growing need to build this understanding, as forest owls had close to 30% of their habitat impacted by the recent bush-fires. 2020 Powerful Owl project report
With over 500 people already signed up to the project, getting involved provides a good opportunity to meet like-minded people, and to help us understand how to protect this elusive but threatened species.
The BirdLife Powerful Owl Project is operating in partnership with Birds Queensland, and is proudly supported by the Queensland Government - Queensland Citizen Science Grants, and the Logan City Council. The project is also, Proudly Supported by the Sunshine Coast Council’s Environment Levy, The Wettenhall EnvironmentTrust, the Australian Environment Foundation and Ipswich City Council. Redland City Council is also proud to provide funding as part of the Community Grants Program to assist the Redlands Community. This project has previously been supported by Brisbane City Council.
