Powered Mobility Device Workshop
Assessment for Scooters and Powered Wheelchairs
A workshop discussing the need for a standardised scooter/powered wheelchair assessment to guide prescription and suitability.
The workshop will introduce and explore the Powered Mobility Device Assessment Training Tool (PoMoDATT) developed by Kathryn Townsend and Carolyn Unsworth. Use of the PoMoDATT ensures that occupational therapists can identify a client’s capacities and abilities for scooter and powered wheelchair use. This workshop will cover how to assess a client’s impairments and functional limitations as well as how training might address these limitations.
Presenter: Kathryn Townsend - B App Sci (OT), Grad Cert Health Sciences (OT)
Kathryn has worked in home based, inpatient rehabilitation and community OT settings. She is a trained OT driver assessor. Her interest in scooter assessment started when safety concerns were raised about a previous client’s ability to use his scooter. Kathryn is currently completing her Masters in Advanced Occupational Therapy. Her research project has been to commence standardising the PoMoDATT tool by completing an inter-rater reliability study.
This workshop is suitable for Occupational Therapists with all levels of experience.
Learning Outcomes: Attendees will;
• Learn to identify skills required for safe scooter and powered wheelchair use
• Engage in discussion around a range of topics for therapists and client considerations during assessment for scooters
• Gain practical experience in using the PoMoDATT
• Increase their knowledge on the range and features of scooters and how to match these to client’s needs
