Event description

Description

Residents from Powelltown, Gilderoy & Three Bridges townships are encouraged to activate their bushfire plans as part of the exercise. Whether your plan is to stay and defend, leave early, or you’re not sure, this is an opportunity to see what you would do during a bushfire.

Emergency Management Victoria together with other emergency services and Yarra Ranges Council will be carrying out activities, as if this were a real fire.

We will conclude with a debrief at the Powelltown Oval at 3pm, where you will have the opportunity to speak to your neighbours and all the agencies and organisations involved, about what worked well, what didn’t and to ask any questions you might have. Hoddles Creek CFA will also be providing everyone with some delicious food and refreshments while we are at the oval.

FAQs

What is an Evacuation Exercise?

An evacuation exercise is a simulated emergency event which provides an opportunity for residents and emergency management agencies to test their plans and procedures.

Emergency Services vehicles and personnel will have a heavy presence in your community on the day, including police patrol vehicles.

What is involved if I choose to participate?

Participation involves: registration (details on the front of this flyer), and participating in the exercise on
Saturday 26th October 2019, this will include following instructions provided to you both in the lead up to, and
on the day, activating your bushfire plan or deciding what you will do based on information given to you by
agencies. If you have family or friends visiting, they are also invited to participate

Can I test my fire plan during the Evacuation Exercise?

Yes, you are encouraged to follow your plan as you would in a real bushfire. There will be further information provided to registered participants prior to the day which will help guide your actions.

If your plan includes, livestock, horses etc. you may choose to simulate their evacuation (i.e. take horse float with no horses).

I don’t have a fire plan, can I still participate?

Yes, we encourage all residents to participate regardless of your level of preparation for bushfire. Exercise warning messages will be issued on the day which will contain instructions that you will be able to follow.

I have children, is it okay for them to take part?

Yes, children should definitely take part.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, pets are welcomed at all venues. All pets must be on a leash/in a pet carrier and under effective control at all times. If you believe evacuating your pet may cause them distress, perhaps consider taking your pet kit, but leaving your pet at home (for scenario purposes only).

I don’t have internet? How can I be involved?

Information will be provided via email, phone and text. If you do not have access/reliable service to any of these platforms please connect with your neighbours/community for important messaging.

I don’t have a mobile phone or have no reception on my property; will this prevent me from participating?

No, information will be provided via email, phone and text. If you do not have access/reliable service to any of these platforms please connect with your neighbours/community for important messaging.
