Chun Yin Rainbow Chan is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist who works across sound, performance and installation. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Sydney, Rainbow is interested in the idea of being between two places and shifts in language and meaning through craft, community and music.

This workshop series draws on Rainbow’s artwork investigating meaning and language. This April school holidays, join Rainbow to learn about special words that have meaning in Chinese culture and adventure through the Chinese Garden of Friendship, learning about basic Chinese characters as they discover the Garden’s stories.

Over this two hour-workshop crafting with air-drying clay, Rainbow will guide participants through a discovery of Chinese characters and meaning, making a series of special clay characters. Once complete, participants can turn their characters into necklaces, wall hangings or keyrings to take home.

For participants aged between 7-17 years, accompanied by a responsible adult. All materials provided, with bookings online required to ensure all participants get to complete their take-home clay characters. Places are limited for each workshop, which is free with entry to the Chinese Garden of Friendship.

Chun Yin Rainbow Chan is a multidisciplinary artist who works across sound, performance and installation. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Sydney, she is interested in duality, diaspora and the effects of globalisation on modern Chinese society. Tying together her works across installation and pop music is the relationship between nostalgia, migration and identity. Since winning FBi Radio’s Northern Lights Competition in 2011, Chan has been building a reputation as one of the most innovative artists in Australia with her highly personal, experimental pop music. She recently released her debut album Spacings (Silo Arts & Records) which was met with critical acclaim, handpicked as the feature album on FBi Radio, Radio Adelaide, RTRFM and scoring 4 stars from Rolling Stone.
