Post-Budget Forum: A Return to Full Employment – the why and how
Fri. 12 May 2017, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm AEST
Australia is in its 26th year of uninterrupted economic growth, but too many Australians aren’t sharing in our nation’s prosperity.
Unemployment is at 5.9%, and underemployment at a record high of 8.6% nationwide – that’s nearly two million people who don’t have enough work to live a good life in one of the wealthiest nations on earth.
Please join former federal treasurer Wayne Swan MP, in conversation with Per Capita’s Stephen Koukoulas, Emma Dawson and Warwick Smith at our next Reform Agenda Series public forum as we discuss how we can support a return to full employment and build a more inclusive society in Australia.
Old excuses for not tackling unemployment don’t hold up in the current economic circumstances, and it’s not enough to spout platitudes about technological disruption and innovation.
If we care about more than the national balance sheet, we must find ways to drive structural change and ensure that the Australian workforce has the skills necessary to work in a globalised, and increasingly casualised and automated, economy.
