Event description

Description

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is the gold standard approach to supporting people with disability who exhibit behaviours of concern. PBS practitioners need to be competent in conducting functional behaviour assessment and develop data-based PBS plans with a central focus on improved relationships and quality of life for individuals presenting with behaviours of concern. It is essential that practitioners overseeing plans are skilled in developing, implementing and evaluating these plans in line with legislation and best practice.

This 3-day training is focused on people working with people with disability and is relevant to a wide variety of populations including Acquired Brain Injury, Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The presenters have extensive clinical experience working within community, hospital, residential care and educational settings.

Topics:

  • Functional behaviour assessment and analysis
  • Antecedent-based (environmental) strategies
  • Skill development strategies
  • Responsive strategies (e.g. reinforcement, differential reinforcement and extinction)
  • Maintenance and generalisation
  • Evaluating and monitroing PBS interventions
  • Writing PBS plans
  • Incident and crisis management
  • Restrictive practices
  • PBS as a team approach; engaging key stakeholders

Assumed knowledge and experience of attendees

This is an intermediate course; Attendees should have a working knowledge of PBS, and have worked with individuals with behaviours of concern.

Applications of learning for clinical practice

The aim of this training is to increase understanding of contemporary approaches to PBS and applying this to interventions that support people with disability who exhibit behaviours of concern. A further aim is for participants to increase their understanding of strategies and techniques to assist in determining the function of behaviour through assessment and analysis, writing plans and implementing PBS strategies.
