Curious about portrait painting but not sure where to start? Join acclaimed Adelaide artist Tim Christinat for a relaxed, hands-on 3-hour portrait workshop designed to build confidence, skills, and creative momentum.

This beginner-friendly session is a social, supportive group experience where you’ll learn the fundamentals of portrait painting using a simple, effective grid method. Working in black and white, you’ll focus on proportion, value, form, and expression - without the overwhelm of colour.

No experience needed, just a willingness to give it a go.

What you’ll learn

  • How to map accurate facial proportions using the grid method
  • Understanding light, shadow, and value in portraiture
  • Observational skills to capture likeness and expression
  • Practical techniques you can keep using at home

What’s included

  • Artist-led instruction in a relaxed group setting
  • All materials supplied (acrylic paints, brushes & canvas)
  • A small canvas (~30 x 30 cm) to take home
  • A finished or in-progress portrait by the end of the session

About the Artist – Tim Christinat

Tim Christinat is a self-taught visual artist based in Adelaide, known for his expressive portraiture and abstract realist style. Painting since 2011, Tim’s work balances strong observation with emotional depth and is collected both nationally and internationally.

Alongside his studio practice, Tim is passionate about education and community engagement, leading workshops that make portrait painting approachable, practical, and fun. In 2025, he appeared as a contestant on ABC’s Portrait Artist of the Year (Australia), showcasing his work on the national stage.

Tim believes portraiture is a powerful way to connect, tell stories, and build creative confidence—and this workshop is designed to help you do exactly that.
