Description

Find out about the history of Port Melbourne's piers on a guided walking tour with, Janet Bolitho, from the Station Pier entrance to the 2018 Piers Festival venue.

The walk would cover points of interest from the start to the Cruise Ship Terminal including:

  • why the Piers were built
  • materiality of the Pier - what it is made of & how it was built
  • story of the wing piers and the excursion steamers
  • the crane and changing work practices at the Pier
  • the changes in shipping over 160 years
  • significant events in the life of the Pier - including gold rush inward migration, departure & arrival for the world wars, the post-war migration period
  • the role the Piers play today
  • responding to questions and building dialogue with walkers who might have family connections with the Piers

Janet Bolitho is an experienced walk leader who specialises in Port Melbourne. She is a member of the Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society and writes about changing Port Melbourne and Fishermans Bend at Port Places.
