Port Adelaide South of St Vincent Street

A walking tour to explore the varied history of the area south of St Vincent St. Park in the shopping centre car park off Dale St and gather near the fountain by the entrance to Foodland for a 6.30pm sharp departure and an approximately 90 minutes leisurely walk led by Brian Samuels.

Topics covered will include flour and timber milling, the development of supermarkets, the Newmarket Building (1879), picture theatres, paint making, the first Presbyterian (1857) and Catholic (1858) and third Congregational (1868: now Uniting) Churches, John Formby’s former warehouse (1865) and a former Odd Fellows (IOOF) Lodge Hall (1866). Town planning and heritage issues will also feature.

HIghlights will include a guided tour of the Port Adelaide Masonic Centre (1928) and a visit to the Local History Collection of the Port Adelaide Library, where our usual end of meeting refreshments will be provided.

As with all the Society’s meetings, non-members are welcome, but To ensure your safety numbers are limited, and you must book to attend this event. Any one joining the group without a ticket will unable participate.
