Description

Join international authority Russell Rook and local expert Lisa Button explore how a community refugee sponsorship program can build powerful bonds between sponsors and refugees, strengthen host communities, and foster positive attitudes towards refugees and resettlement in Australia. This roundtable will explore the unique Australian policy issues and look at how the current Community Sponsorship Program can be improved and expanded. Learn more about community sponsorship in Australia.

Questions and discussion are welcome from all invitees.

Russell Rook

Having previously worked for The Salvation Army and founded a charity delivering innovative community services in disadvantaged communities, Dr Russell Rook went on to serve as a Parliamentary Aide to Baroness Sherlock of Durham in the House of Lords, serving on the Labour Welfare team in Parliament, before becoming an advisor on faith and civil society to the then Leader of the Opposition, Ed Miliband MP. As a partner at the Good Faith Partnership, a social consultancy helping leaders from different sectors to design creative solutions to society’s more intractable problems, Russell leads the RAMP Project, a cross party initiative seeking to transform the immigration debate in the UK and worked with government and civil society to help co-construct the Community Sponsorship Scheme for Refugees. Russell also serves as the chair of Reset, a new charity building the capacity of local communities to welcome and integrate refugees across the UK and regularly works with the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative, helping other countries to develop sponsorship programmes.
