Description

Poetry workshop: Melinda Smith - Lines that Sing

What makes a poem really work, really stick, really lift off the page - or catch fire in performance ?

Lots of things. Lots of things in combination. The chemistry is complicated, hard to reproduce, and even harder to scale. If there were a formula it would have been bottled by now.

However it is pretty obvious that one of the key elements is skilful use of word-music. That’s right. Boring old alliteration, assonance, rhythm, repetition, variation. You may think you’ve heard it all before. But how long is it since you really thought about it with reference to your own work ? And how long is it since you had a serious look at what other people are doing to make this part of poetry new? Or thought about what you could steal (..ahem..learn..) from word artists working in other genres ?

Come along for two hours of reading, listening and tinkering. We will look at examples ranging from Hopkins to Plath, from Judith Wright to AE Stallings, from Omar Musa to Ellen Van Neerven, from Bob Dylan to Courtney Barnett to the Hilltop Hoods. Bring something of your own to work on if you wish, something to write with, something to write on, an open mind and a sense of adventure.
