Event description
Pochoir (French for stencil) is a refined technique used for making stencil prints. A fun workshop for beginner level.

About this Event

Monotype printmaking is an immediate and versatile process. This workshop is very much about having fun, experimenting with colour and shape and being surprised and delighted by the prints that are produced. It is suitable for beginners as the level of technical expertise required is low.

The pochoir method, using stencils which can be cut from old X-ray films or from card stock, is especially spontaneous.

Stencils are inked in solid colours and layered face up on an inked acetate plate. This first print is quite graphic with bold shapes and colours. Next the stencils are removed from the plate, reordered or turned over and again layered on the ghost ink remaining on the plate. This is when the magic begins - with unpredictable patterns emerging as a result of the layering process. The flipping, layering and reprinting continues - with each new print a bit more subtle than the previous one. The stencils and plate can be re-inked as needed.

We will start the day by creating a selection of stencils with a variety of shapes. Students should bring sketches / ideas for stencils - simple forms are fine.
