Event description
A hands-on History Festival event for you to ponder and practice the different ways we use historical thinking while playing board games.

About this event

Have you ever Googled a fact while watching a historical TV show? Wondered whether the pixilated clothing in your fantasy video game was historically accurate (even though it isn't technically set in the Middle Ages)? Pondered whether your strategies for playing a world-war themed board game were similar to prime ministers and presidents of the past? Well, you are not alone, and this is the event for you!

This interactive session will ask you - the players - to come to the table(s) ready to think a little bit differently about how we learn history. The event will begin with a short opening talk by Tess Watterson and Tamika Glouftsis, both PhD candidates at the University of Adelaide researching historical games, then you will have the opportunity to play with the past yourself, with some of the many board games in the games library at The Lost Dice. The games have been chosen for their historical inspiration, and you'll be encouraged to discuss and debate the different ways you might actually be gaining historical knowledge, or at least engaging in historical thinking, while you are playing. This events offers an outside the box way to do history, perhaps challenging some preconceptions about the field of history, but in the very least giving you a chance to have some good old dice-rolling fun.

Due to COVID-19 regulations, the venue capacity is very strict and registration is required. This is a free event, but please take your registration seriously due to these limited numbers. If you change your mind or are no longer able to use your ticket, please contact the organisers as someone else might be able to take your spot. If you are unwell or exhibit any COVID-19 symptoms immediately prior to the event, please stay home.

The event will be hosted in the function room of the The Lost Dice, a board game restaurant and bar in the heart of Adelaide. The ground floor is a shop and cafe, level one is a board game bar with a library of over $10 000 worth of board games for customers to play, and finally, the top floor is the function room, where they hold many fantastic events - including this one! Unfortunately, as we are on a third level, this event is not wheelchair accessible. Please contact the organisers about any other accessibility inquires and we will do our best to make the event as inclusive as possible!

Please note this event is not catered and thus your ticket does not include food or drink, however there are plenty of delicious options at the Lost Dice should you wish to purchase sustenance before, after, or even during the event.

If you have any questions about this event please contact the organisers through this event page.
