Event description

Description

Contemporary media can be characterised as playful. How does play get complicated by the textures of playbour intrinsic to the QS movement and the ways in which urban everyday life becomes part of algorithmic patterns? How do users push back and subvert data and its relationship to power, the body and identity?

This interdisciplinary workshop will consist of a variety of provocations into the debate around how playful resistance as a tactic, strategy, mode of inquiry and creative, critical practice might be used to intervene on hybrid reality — encompassing everything from artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) augmented reality (AR), quantified self (QS), automation and algorithm cultures.

Through a series of 15 min provocations, artists and researchers will question what it means to think about play playfulness and resistance in relation to current media and hybrid realities. Provocations seek to bring interdisciplinary insights into the challenge of activism and intervention within these emerging media cultures.

This workshop is supported jointly by RMIT’s Design & Creative Practice ECP and Information and Systems (Engineering) ECP.
