Keynote Speaker – Hanna Wirman

‘Animaling’ through digital game design

This private lecture addresses digital game design for animals as an example of animaling. Drawing on my own design for captive orangutans as well as from various recent research and commercial projects, the talk considers game design interventions in non-human animal everyday life critically assessing the ways in which we assume behaviours, interests, abilities, and preferences from non-human animal players and how these aspects of animal behaviour then contribute to human ‘knowledge’ of specific species.

Dr. Hanna Wirman is a Research Assistant Professor at the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University where she leads an MSc study stream in Game Development. She researches marginal and critical ways of playing and making games. Hanna serves as the President of Chinese DiGRA and on the Executive Board of Digital Games Research Association. She is the Director of Global Game Jam Hong Kong.
