Description

DESCRIPTION:

A one off special event for Spark Youth Theatre & the Inner West Community!

International playwright, Micharne Cloughley, is popping by Spark Youth Theatre along her whirlwind trip to Aus, all the way from New York to bring her work to Spark Youth Theatre. My Strong Female Ego is her brand new play based on recorded interviews with Hazel de Berg.

“Girls got married and had babies and did the right thing and all the rest of it, and I could never fit into that and there were lots of other people, too, who perhaps didn't have what one young man called to me the other day "my strong male ego" to help them through.” – Dorothy Hewett in her oral history recorded by Hazel de Berg, 1973.

Hazel de Berg was an Australian pioneer of oral history. As part of her life’s work, she interviewed many very different, very inspiring women. My Strong Female Ego is a play created from these woman-to-woman oral histories. These ladies may not have featured in your history books, but they are soon to feature in your heart. Written by Micharne Cloughley (who is super excited to hear this reading), My Strong Female Ego is supported by the 2016 Friends Creative Arts Fellowship at the National Library of Australia.

This is a unique opportunity for the young people of Spark Youth Theatre, to work with an internationally celebrated playwright. Micharne will take the time to mentor some of our budding artists in the afternoon. In the evening, we will hear these same young people bring her new play to life with a script-in-hand reading of this exciting new drama.
