Event description

Description

Play is at the centre of human development. It is the foundation upon which creative pursuits, and all sorts of developments occur in science, business, the arts, technology and all manner of aspects of life that we take for granted. Play is so often dismissed as what young children do, with the hope they'll soon grow out of it, and get on with what's required and expected of them in what has become centrally planned and directed mainstreamed schooling. Yet, we all need to remember the pleasure, fun, enjoyment, liberation that play provides, along with its developmental qualities. Just as learning is natural to humans from birth, so is play.

Psychologist, Prof. Peter Gray, author of Freedom to Learn, will join with a panel of local speakers to explore the deep connections between play and learning, historically and contextually. Their experiences and research, as parents, educators, tertiary qualified professionals, both in classrooms and in less structured environments such as democratic schools should prove informative and supportive, especially of those parents, teachers and children who often feel they're on the outer, because their beliefs, values and voices in support of children's unforced natural development are on the margins and rarely heard, much less listened to.

This event, Play and the Freedom to Learn, will be held in:
