Event description

Description

Free event as part of ACT Mental Health Month, open to all.

Hear guest speaker, distinguished Emeritus Professor Ian Webster AO present ideas on helping people with serious, enduring mental illness improve their physical health. This group has much shorter life expectancies than the general population due to easily preventable physical illnesses. Light refreshments provided.

It is well documented that this group has a substantially reduced life expectancy and much higher levels of risk factors for several preventable chronic illnesses than people without mental illness. For example, people experiencing psychosis are likely to live 14 to 23 years less than the general population, largely due to cardiovascular disease and cancer rather than suicide. The gap is widening. The highest risks are from respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and diabetes.

This presentation will be of interest to a wide audience, including people with mental illness, their carers, general practitioners, psychiatrists, other health professionals working in mental health, health promotion and ill health prevention or in treating or caring or those with chronic diseases, students across the full range of health professions and the general public.

Professor Webster is a former Commissioner of the National Mental Health Commission and a tireless advocate for mental health and suicide prevention reform over many years. He has special expertise in working with disadvantaged people and the links between drug and alcohol use, chronic pain, suicide, mental illness, physical illnesses and dysfunctional communities.

MC is well known and respected Michael Moore, AM: Immediate Past President, World Federation of Public Health Associations; Distinguished Fellow, The George Institute, University of NSW; Adjunct Professor University of Canberra; Visiting Professor, University of Technology, Sydney; and a former ACT Health Minister.

Please register to help us in arranging refreshments. Talk begins at 1.30pm for approximately one hour. Stay on afterwards for light refreshments and a chance to talk with others about the issues raised.

This event would have not been possible without a 2019 ACT Mental Health Month Grant and Professor Webster's generously giving his time.
