Dr Carson’s primary areas of research are in early literacy development in particular assessment, monitoring and instruction around precursory reading skills such as phonological awareness development, letter-sound knowledge, vocabulary development and so forth. Session Title: Phonological awareness & early reading development: Evidence based assessment & instructional practices for children aged 4 – 7 years
About this session:
This workshop will focus on evidence-based practice in the area of phonological awareness instruction and its relationship to learning to read for children aged 4 to 7 years.
First, this workshop will focus on research evidence regarding the role of phonological awareness and associated code-based skills in supporting early reading development. Second, this workshop will focus on practical and research-based methods of assessment and instruction that can be implemented across both preschool and early schooling settings. Early childhood and junior primary school teachers, including those with special education roles, would benefit from this workshop.
Key learning outcomes include understanding:
a) the relationship between phonological awareness and learning to read and spell,
b) how to select appropriate assessment tools and then interpret this information for instructional practice, and
c) methods for teaching phonological awareness skills and linking this to print for children of varying ages and ability levels.
Attendance certificates will be available for collection at the conclusion of the event. Please note, minimum numbers are required for this event to proceed.
