Event description

Description

We know that pet ownership has many benefits for individuals and families and Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. Many pet owners do not own their own homes and need to rent. In a tight, competitive rental market getting and staying in rental accommodation can be a serious problem for pet owners. Where they cannot find accommodation the consequences can be dire, for pet owners and their pets, including for an increasing number of older pet owners. This public session will look at what is happening for pet owners wanting to rent, the issues they face and the options and solutions there may be to get a better outcome for pet owners and their pets.

The session will be hosted and Chaired by Tara Cheyne MLA, Patron of Pets and Positive Ageing Inc. The line-up of great speakers includes Jan Phillips, President of Pets and Positive Ageing; Teresa Kent, Founder, Canberra Dog Rehoming (Facebook); Deb Pippen, Executive Officer, Tenants' Union ACT; Dr Liz Walker, Chief Executive Officer, RSPCA Victoria; Jo Wood, Coordinator-General for Family Safety, Community Services Directorate, ACT Government; Richard Davies, Co-Principal, Belle Property Kingston; and Samantha Henry, Senior Manager of Engagement Services, Northside Community Service.

The session will end with a Q and A with speakers and Mary Porter AM, Patron of Pets and Positive Ageing Inc,
