Event description

Description

The Research Bazaar (ResBaz) is a worldwide festival promoting the digital literacy emerging at the center of modern research. The aim of this event is to equip researchers from all career stages with the digital skills and tools required to do their research better, faster and smarter. A unique blend of academic and social life, ResBaz is an event unlike any academic conference you've ever been to.

To read more about the history and philosophy of ResBaz, check out these blog posts from The Research Whisperer and Software Carpentry.

This year we are planning to run more parallel streams to cater to both new and more seasoned learners.

You will be able to choose 2 options (1 from Training 1 and 1 from Training 2). Training 1 held on day 1 will include the options:

  • Intro to the command line and Version Control (Git)
  • Intro to structured data
  • Intro to Docker (Command line experience required)

and stream training (Training 2) on days 2 and 3 will include the following options:

  • Data analysis and visualisation with Python (beginner level)
  • Data analysis and visualisation with R (beginner level)
  • Data and digital tools in the Humanities and Arts (beginner level)
  • Genomics (specialisation, intermediate level)
  • Intro to Machine Learning (intermediate to advanced level)

You will be asked to choose your preferred option for Training 1 and 2 during registration, as the running of each stream will depend on interest.

If you are unsure of what to choose, the introductory R and Python streams will teach research computing skills based on the Carpentries lessons. These streams go well together with the introduction to the command line and version control using git and github or the intro to structured data. The Machine Learning and Docker options are aimed at more seasoned learners, as you will need to be able to program. And for the first time this year we are also working on bringing you a stream aimed at researchers from the Humanities and Arts (and related fields), which will introduce some amazing tools to help with your research without jumping straight into the deep end of programming.

Don't forget apart from the stream workshops we will also have plenty of elective classes which you choose on the day at the bazaar. The electives will cover some of the "softer" skills on how to promote your research, how to put together a good presentation, and in general how to develop and refine a research questions as well as some more advanced technical subjects like cloud computing or LaTeX.
