Description

You are invited to attend a roundtable to discuss new data sharing and release legislation in Perth, hosted by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Background

On 1 May 2018, the Hon Michael Keenan MP, the Minister for Digital Transformation, announced a suite of reforms in response to the Productivity Commission’s Inquiry into data availability and use. The reforms, include the creation of a National Data Commissioner to oversee a new data access framework and new legislation to remove red tape inhibiting research and growth while maintaining data security and privacy.

A new Commonwealth Data Sharing and Release Bill will provide a simpler, more efficient framework to govern data across Government and provide a strong focus on identifying and managing risk. In July, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet released an issues paper on the development of the Data Sharing and Release Bill for public comment. The issues paper outlines the scope of the new legislation and the key principles proposed to underpin the new Bill.

Submissions on the Issues Paper are now closed, however the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet would also like to invite you or a suitable representative from your organisation to attend a short workshop to discuss the proposed Bill (details below).
